In today's busy world, children are more likely to be found playing with a smart phone than practicing their penmanship. As a parent we want what's best for our children. In the world we live in, children with "old school" habits get noticed. It is almost sad to acknowledge, but a child who holds open a door for an adult, carries a heavy bag for an elderly woman, or even has neat and practiced penmanship can set them apart from the rest of their peers.
Having neat and clear handwriting may seem a bit old fashioned. You are more likely to add appointments into your digital calendar or send an email reminder than you would write a quick note to establish a meeting these days. The challenge for our children is that they simply do not spend the time necessary to master beautiful writing. As parents and educators, we need to demonstrate that not only is legible writing important, but that it can be fun as well.
Kids are not easily fooled. Handing them a pencil and a simple piece of paper to practice writing sends the message that "this is not very important". On the other hand, giving the child a variety of pencils (in various colors) along with visually stimulating paper can make all the difference int he world to how they view the time spent learning to write their abc's.
Kids need to learn how to spell their entire name, where they live, their parents name, and their phone number. These types of facts make for ideal writing exercises. Kids know when they are engaged in "busy" work. Learning and writing these types of important life details will be viewed as important, even for the young child.
A fun project is for the child to help put together a personal folder called My phone and Address Book. Using beautiful templates the child can create sections where they can practice writing their important contact information. Use plastic page protectors to hold each sheet, and keep this important resource near the phone book. When the child sees you value their work, they will be more willing to invest their time to practice.
Beautiful penmanship used to be the norm. Kids used to practice carefully forming their letters each and everyday, sometimes for hours on end. Obviously we live in a very different world, but beautiful penmanship can distinguish a diligent student much the same way that unintelligible writing can cause the child frustration and embarrassment.
Excellent handwriting is simply a matter of determined practice. Supplying your child with a few creative and fun supplies can make all the difference in the world.
